Possibilities and limitations for improving the use of byproducts in pig feeding: results of a field study. [German]

The advantages and disadvantages of feeding recycled byproducts to pigs were investigated in a survey based on questionnaires presented to pig producers and consultants in Germany. Variation in the total DM content and in the composition of the DM was regarded as the major disadvantage in feeding byproducts. On the other hand, experience showed that it was possible to reduce feed costs for pig finishing by about 10 deutsche marks/pig. Further plus points included: an environmentally friendly image due to recycling of wastes; flavour enhancement; low pH, with health advantages; and possibilities of combining with cereal feeding. However, further limitations that have to be taken into account are: high investment costs in feeding technology; limited durability of wet byproducts; the consequences of using byproducts on the image of the product as food; higher demands on the farmer in terms of stall cleaning, animal health requirements, and control of feed quality; and uncertain permission in meat quality programmes.
